Michel Koole

Graduated as a master in physics and trained as a certified medical physicist, Michel Koole finished his PhD in the beginning of 2002 at the University of Ghent with a doctoral thesis on quantitative SPECT imaging of the brain. After a FWO postdoctoral fellowship, he worked for private software companies developing medical image analysis software. Beginning 2007, he joined the nuclear medicine department of UZ Gasthuisberg Leuven, first as a medical physicist for the image analysis of contract research PET studies and at a later stage as a research expert in quantitative molecular imaging. Mid 2012, he joined the medical physics team of the nuclear medicine and molecular imaging department of the University Medical Center Groningen, the Netherlands, to strengthen medical physics research efforts. Since October 2014, he has been appointed as associate professor at the KU Leuven. Research interests will mainly focus on translational aspects of PET imaging and quantitative hybrid PET/CT and PET/MRI imaging. Within the context of specific clinical questions in terms of diagnosis and therapy response assessment, main objective is to provide a quantitative imaging platform for an improved analysis and better understanding of disease related pathophysiological processes. Research efforts will be embedded within a multidisciplinary and multimodal approach and include PET kinetic modelling, univariate and multivariate data analysis and tumour lesion detection and segmentation He co-authored over 80 scientific journal papers, three book chapters and is co-inventor of two patents.
